Working together

Community guidelines

Simple rules that help us work together to protect Ghana's environment.

We trust you to do the right thing.

Reports are published immediately because we believe in the community's ability to share accurate information. These guidelines help maintain that trust.

What we expect from you

  • Be honest. Report what you actually witnessed. Don't exaggerate or make things up.
  • Be specific. Include details about location, timing, and what you observed. Vague reports are less useful.
  • Respect privacy. Don't share other people's personal information—names, addresses, or photos of individuals.
  • Stay on topic. This platform is for reporting illegal mining. Other issues should go to the appropriate authorities.
  • Be constructive. If you disagree with a report, explain why. Attacks and insults don't help anyone.

Content that's not allowed

We'll remove content and may suspend accounts for:

  • Harassment and threats. Attacking, threatening, or intimidating other users.
  • Hate speech. Content that attacks people based on ethnicity, religion, gender, or other protected characteristics.
  • Spam. Repeated posts, advertising, or content unrelated to illegal mining.
  • Doxxing. Sharing someone's personal information without their consent—such as their real name, address, workplace, or phone number.
  • False reports. Knowingly submitting fake or misleading information.
  • Impersonation. Pretending to be an official, organization, or another user.

How moderation works

Moderation is community-driven. Here's how it works:

Anyone can flag

See something that violates these guidelines? Flag it for review.

Trusted reviewers decide

Experienced community members review flagged content.

Actions are transparent

You can see why content was removed (but not who flagged it).

You can appeal

Disagree with a decision? Request a review by different moderators.

Report verification

Community members can vote on whether they can verify a report from their own knowledge of the area:

  • Verified: "I can confirm this is happening"
  • Disputed: "I have information that contradicts this"
  • Unclear: "I don't have enough information to say"

Verification doesn't mean we remove reports—it helps partners understand which reports have community support.

What moderators don't do

Moderators enforce these guidelines, but they don't:

  • Judge whether mining claims are true. That's for verification and partner investigation.
  • Remove reports they disagree with. Personal opinions aren't grounds for removal.
  • Change your report. Only you can edit your own reports.

What happens if you break the rules

  • First time: Content removed with an explanation.
  • Repeated issues: Temporary suspension from posting.
  • Serious violations: Permanent account suspension.

Serious violations include harassment, credible threats, and sharing illegal content. These may result in immediate suspension without warning.
